I really enjoy the way Don Camillo and Peppone are apparently enemies, total opposites yet really best friends, both working for the good of others. The only difficulty is in telling which is which. They are truly heartwarming tales, and though I have read all of them, in various collections over the years, I still love t I have loved these books since I was fourteen.

Giovannino Guareschi was an Italian journalist, cartoonist and humorist who lived at Parma, near the River Po. Since the end of the war, Stalin has been working to absorb Eastern Europe into the Soviet orbit, with every expectation of Italy being annexed to the Soviet Socialist Republic.

He wants to realise the communist ideals, and the Roman Catholic priest Don Camillo is desperately trying to prevent this. Don Camillo; The Crucified Christ with whom Don Camillo has many conversations, including arguments ; Peppone and his red-scarved minions; local landowners and crooks and peasants and ex-partisans… This book made me smile.
Reading the stories in this light adds to the fun. There is the constant fear that one side will press the nuclear button and the whole world be reduced to guardschi.

You would be hard pressed to find a more charming book anywhere than this set of short stories.
This book is an exchange of blows between Don Camillo the priest and Peppone the communist town major of a remote little italian village. I did wrong, I admit it, and Camlio shall repent. In another story he catches one of the Peppone’s supporters breaking into the church, and has to do some real detective work in order to reveal the intruder’s real motive, before “giving him a hearty kick in the pants”. The Bought this book at a tag sale last year because it was such an interesting little paperback book. Giovannino Oliviero Giuseppe Guareschi Italian: The narrator and Voice of the Christ was Cyril Cusack.
I haven’t read this book for many, many years and I was surprised to find that it actually is a lot more serious than its reputation.
